Abstract

Sanskara signifies the process of refinement or proper conditioning. The tradition of Sanskara constitutes our great spiritual heritage; it can be described as training in the art of living. Through profound research into the science of life, our ancient sages revealed that human existence is merely one stage in the vast journey of the individual soul. This journey involves numerous critical turning points or crossroads where, in the absence of guidance, there is a significant risk of going astray. By placing a 'signpost' of guidance—in the form of a Sanskara—at each such juncture, the sages successfully pioneered the creation of a cultured society. There are considerable differences of opinion among ancient authorities regarding the number and names of these rites. While Sage Gautama enumerated forty and Angira twenty-five, the majority of scholars—including Vyasa and Manu—accepted the number sixteen; the widespread recognition of the Shodash Sanskara (sixteen rites) is a result of this consensus. Some authorities have also proposed counts of twelve or ten. Considering the contemporary mindset and circumstances, the revered Gurudev Pt. Shriram Sharma Acharya emphasized conducting the following twelve Sanskaras as part of a comprehensive campaign, while integrating the significant rituals and inspirational elements of the remaining rites into these twelve. These rites are: Pumsavana, Namakarana (Naming Ceremony), Annaprashana (First Feeding of Solids), Chudakarana (Tonsure/Mundan), Upanayana (Investiture of the Sacred Thread), Vivaha (Marriage), Vanaprastha (Retirement/Transition to Forest Life), Antyesti (Funeral Rites), Maranottara (Post-death Rites), Janmadivasa (Birthday), and Vivaha-divasa (Wedding Anniversary). Guidance imparted within the sanctified atmosphere of a Yajna influences an individual's inner consciousness, thereby completing the spiritual process of training for both the individual and the family. This process is akin to how raw, unrefined metals like copper or iron, extracted from mines, are processed in large factories (such as steel plants) to become refined and useful products; or how a common piece of iron is transformed into a beneficial medicinal compound (Lauha Bhasma) by Ayurvedic experts through processes involving intense heating (Gajaputa), calcination, and grinding (Kharal). Similarly, through the process of Sanskars (sacramental rites), our sages paved the way for the spiritual and material evolution of human beings, elevating them from ordinary humans to the stature of Mahamanav (great beings) and Devmanav (divine beings). In doing so, they realized the vision of bringing heaven to earth. The same process is set to unfold once again in the present times. Sanskars are defined as the infusion of virtues or the eradication of vices (Sayana Bhashya); the tradition of Sanskars essentially entails fostering noble tendencies and eliminating base ones. This is the need of the hour; only through this can divinity be established within human beings and heavenly conditions—characterized by prosperity—be created on earth.
